Rotary Action Group for Addiction Prevention: Rotarian Mariah Kill to Train 100 Local Teachers to Save Lives

Updated: Sep 7

On September 19, Rotarian Mariah Kill will lead a crucial training at Leon High School, where over 100 teachers will learn how to administer Naloxone, a life-saving drug that reverses opioid overdoses.

This initiative, supported by the Rotary Action Group for Addiction Prevention, aims to empower educators with the knowledge and tools to save lives in the face of the opioid epidemic.

The Importance of Naloxone

Naloxone is a proven tool in the fight against opioid overdoses. According to the Substance Use Dashboard published by the Florida Department of Health, as the number of Naloxone doses administered has increased, drug overdose deaths have declined. This trend is evident in both Florida and Leon County.

For example, in Leon County:

  • In 2019, 34 fatal drug overdoses occurred, with 144 doses of Naloxone administered.

  • By 2022, overdose deaths decreased to 31, while Naloxone administrations surged to 380 doses.

  • Between 2019 and 2022, Leon County saw an almost 9% decrease in drug overdose deaths, while Naloxone administrations increased by 163%.

Statewide, Florida experienced similar trends:

  • In 2019, the state saw 5,577 overdose deaths and administered 35,810 doses of Naloxone.

  • By 2022, overdose deaths had dropped to 3,776, and Naloxone doses administered increased to 51,752.

This 32% decline in overdose deaths across Florida, paired with a 45% rise in Naloxone usage, underscores the life-saving impact of this medication.

Empowering Teachers, Saving Lives

The upcoming training at Leon High School is just one part of Rotary’s broader effort to combat addiction and reduce overdose deaths. By equipping teachers with the skills to administer Naloxone, we are adding another layer of protection in our schools and communities. Teachers are often on the front lines of crises, and with this knowledge, they can be prepared to act swiftly and effectively if needed.

Together, we can make a difference and save lives. Naloxone saves lives, and education is the key to empowering more people to make a life-saving impact.
